Hello, and welcome to UMassWiki!
We suggest you read the following pages to learn your way around the wiki:
- UMassWiki:Guidelines - important!
- Help:Contents - lots of editing tips, including a 1-page printable cheat sheet
If you're here because you're participating in a class that uses the wiki, these two pages are very important to read:
And welcome to Class:Section 71 - ENG 112 - Spring 2007! Don't forget to explore rest of the wiki as well. You're welcome to edit anything on the wiki -- not just pages for your class.
Important: Since you're going to be editing pages for your class, the following two articles are very important:
You need to understand how to make subpages so your stuff ends up in the right place. Aside from all that, if you just want a quick-start guide on things like how to make text bold or how to make line breaks between paragraphs, try this downloadable and printable Cheatsheet. - Yes, I was thinking the same thing! Meanwhile, Mr. IceCreamMan, you posted incorrectly on Paul's User Page, instead of on his User talk page. When you click t hrough on someone's signature it takes you to their User Page, you have to click on the "discussion" tab to arrive at the proper page for messages. steph (COM) 11:50, 18 February 2007 (EST)

[edit] power move
I moved all the action on your User page to your User talk page. Obviously I didn't notice that we were in 'the wrong place' before or I'd have busted you then. I kept one item on your User page, though, the extra link you put in to the Quiz 3 results. That's a personalization of your User page along the lines I want to see. :-) Meanwhile, the chit-chatty stuff belongs here. ko? we good? don't melt on me! steph (COM) 21:12, 23 February 2007 (EST)

[edit] Poo Poo
I'm liking your User Page, but let's tweak it a wee bit. There is an already existing page for Penguin Points. THAT is where I will give you credit for posting but only if you clean up the formatting so it is readable. I posted directions on the Penguin Points page, which has the technical name (for outsiders) of Grammar and Mechanics. phane88 already posted but did not follow the instructions. I'll fix the first example, and then you'll have a model, ok? You will earn one extra credit point for each item you post, AND you will earn another point if you make a link to this page from your own User Page. IceCreamCone! Do you follow? steph (COM) 16:37, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
[edit] Penguin Points II
Also, put your entries into alphabetical order with the existing entries. This is why I want you to "sign" each entry individually. So, between yours and phane88's, and anyone else who adds later, we have an online resource for everyone to use. steph (COM) 16:45, 2 April 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Unit 3 Reflection
Reflectors On My Bike by Peter
When reading my classmates’ unit two reflection letters, I realized that the fact that I am in the same boat as them is pretty obvious. Although I do not view myself as a great writer or even a writer at all, many of them feel the same exact way. People wrote things such as “Once again I received a C as my grade the first time around. I struggled with this piece.” I feel the exact same way as Jessica, and I had no idea. My grades and performance seemed relatively low compared to what I was used to, however the majority of students feel the same way as I do. With the Unit two letter, I agree totally with Phane88 when she says “I had a hard time finding a claim to make an argument between the author.” Mainly because it was a bland article and not highly debatable. I can learn from their strategies by simply doing as they do and following the feedback Steph gives on every paper.
I noticed a lot of problems people are experiencing, that simply have nothing to do with what I am struggling with as a writer. First off, some students such as phane88 and Dan announced that they were happy with some of their initial grades. I was not happy with a single one of my initial grades. Also, some people struggled with things such as quotes; not to say I am a pro with quotes, but that is not a concern to me as a writer. Finally, John? talked about how he struggled with informalities in his paper. This is a problem I have never struggled with but I am sure have been informal from time to time. Overall, I can say that the problems others struggle with, can not help me to perfect my writing. This is simply because I am not them.
I don’t know if I in fact take inspiration from my peers’ problems. I can totally relate to what they go through when writing and rewriting papers, which lets me know I am not alone as an often discouraged writer. That helps my confidence when writing, but as far as inspiration goes, I don’t think I can get inspired from the shortcomings of other writers; particularly those in my class.
[edit] metacommunicative response
Your energy seems low, discouraged - but that could be my concern about you/your experience rather than how you actually felt while writing this Third Reflection. Your matter-of-fact tone conveys a solid sense of self: you faced some adversity this semester and have managed to continue to perform. This is commendable. :-) Looking at your Third Reflection as its own piece of writing shows me you held a narrow focus. You mention being "in the same boat" and also that some problems "have nothing to do with what I am struggling with as a writer." These two statements respond to some of the details of the assignment, but are not tied together in an overarching claim. Your last paragraph also responds to a discrete question. The next big leap for you - based on this - is to imagine how you can frame the three answers under one theme. What would that theme be? How are these questions/answers related? What is their logic or meaningfulness to you? Once you wrap your head around a unifying factor, then you can make a specific claim and rewrite the answers as evidence to support it.
I hope this makes sense! :-) 128.119.195.91 10:54, 16 May 2007 (EDT)
