Initial impressions of "The Buzz Buzz Boom, by Seth Gore"

  • Our group definitely did not think that Dean was deaf in the beginning
  • It is obvious that Dean is insecure about his relationships with people
  • He is afraid to be in a serious relationship with MaryAnn
  • He keeps daydreaming
  • Possibly afraid of commitment?

Identifying details in "The Buzz Buzz Boom, by Seth Gore"

Comprehensive Questions

  1. Name of characters: MaryAnn, Dean (narrator), Uncle Richard
  2. In the story Dean and MaryAnn are communicating through many different senses opposed to the limited senses Dead used when communicating with Uncle Richard. Uncle Richard can only "hear" the engine roar in his Thunderbird. Dean embraces life differently, and he see's the bigger picture of life as a whole. It seems that Uncle Richard's senses are limited which strains his relationship with Dean.
  3. MaryAnn and Dean do this by soaking in their surroundings, and by communicating in more ways than one. Throughout the story the fate of their relationship is based off of the communication between them as a couple.
  4. What I have learned, or what we learned as a group, was that through communication and choosing to not be ignorant about the things around you, you will in the end see life as something larger than it actually is, and you learn to appreciate the little things more. Uncle Richard was very one sided when it came to his senses, and his and Dean's relationship faltered because of this. Dean struggle to trust MaryAnn because he was afraid that he would have this same issue with his relationship with MaryAnn.
  5. It seemed at the beginning of the story you think you understand the big picture, but as the story goes on so many different aspects are put into play that make you question what you were originally thinking from the get go.
  6. Questions that arose from the story:
  • What does this have to do with communications?
  • What is this story really about?
  • Is Dean deaf?
  • Do all the small details tie into the big picture, or the true meaning of the story?

"Signs" on Dean's deafness (quotes from The Buzz Buzz Boom, by Seth Gore)

  • Dean never states that he "hears" MaryAnn, he always knows she "said" something
  • "She nodded and smiled, and said I Love You" (p. 1) -- this is a possible clue because there are no quotations around I Love You which can be interpreted to her as signing because without the quotes she is not actually speaking
  • MaryAnn laughs at Seinfeld while she is watching TV and Dean does not. This can hint that he is deaf too because he could not know what the TV is saying because he cannot hear the sound
  • "'Do you hear this?" Uncle Richard would ask me in awkward, incumbent sign" (p. 2) This bluntly a fact that Dean is deaf. Uncle Richard struggles to use sign language to communicate with Dean which shows because their relationship is so strained
  • Uncle Richard constantly asks him if he can "hear" the engine and Dean constantly tells him he cannot the same way Uncle Richard wants him to
  • "It's too bad that you don't hear that at all. You don't know what it's like, too bad-it's too bad" (p. 2) -- Here Uncle Richard shows his sadness towards Dean's deafness because he wants him to be able to be compelled the way he is by the true sound of the engine.
  • Dean "feels" everything opposed to hearing things because he needs to make his other senses stronger, and he knows because of his disability he needs to embrace it instead of being negative, and dwelling on all of the flaws it entails
  • Dean loved the "feel" of everything because he had to use it as a substitute for his lack of hearing
  • "It was unable for me to hear" (p. 2) -- this shows how he could not hear the engine at all
  • "Of course I'm hearing it very well, buzzin' sweet and dainty. But do you realize I'm not hearing it with my ears but with my whole body?" (p. 3) -- here Dean is responding to Uncle Richard's constant disappointment telling him that he can hear it, but in a different way because as said before because he is deaf he has to find a way to substitute his other senses for his loss of hearing
  • Dean wants to be "forgiven for what he is" which shows how he is insecure about his disability, which can maybe show how he is afraid to commit to MaryAnn because maybe she won't accept him
  • He wants MaryAnn to know the "world through my eyes" (p. 4) which is a statement saying that he see's the world differently than most people because he is deaf
  • "And the other (hand) surveyed for messages that her hand had sent" (p. 5) -- this is MaryAnn signing into Dean's hand when it is dark so he knows what she is saying to him
  • "Hands. Touch and feel. No light, no sound" (p. 5) -- this is Dean describing a moment in the motel room with MaryAnn, and he discusses touching and feeling which most deaf people have to do to carry on whatever they are doing because they need to feel the movements and maybe MaryAnn signing so he can understand what she wants
  • "Not knowing how to talk to me" (p. 6) -- this shows that Uncle Richard was uncomfortable with Dean's deafness, and this led to their strained relationship because Uncle Richard did not know how to have a normal relationship with Dean because he could not look past his disability

Selective Attention Report

Gorillas

From the Team Quiz

  1. From our teams previous experiences we had all already seen the first video, so we were knowing what to look for. Although when we first initially saw the "Gorilla Experiment Video" neither of us noticed the gorilla walking by because we were so fixated on counting the number of passes between the white team. When we watched it today we were distracted because we already knew what was coming. The second video looked exactly the same as the first, so we were just looking for the gorilla, and realized that two other things happened instead during that time that we did not notice. We were fixated on the gorilla and the number of passes only to find out that we missed the curtain color change from red to a goldish orange, and one of the black teammates leaving the activity. At the end of the second video they explained why we missed the other two events because they say how when asked to you can truly only focus on one thing. Our group discussed how this somewhat relates to the concept of tunnel vision because when an individual has their sights set on one object they develop "tunnel vision" and cannot focus on anything else going on around them. It kind of makes all of the other activities going on around become a blur. Our group doesn't necessarily think that we are not perceptive because we did not notice the other actions going on; We think that when you know what to expect, and you know what you need to focus on, you draw conclusions that sometimes end up being wrong. Overall it was definitely an interesting experience for the three of us because we knew what to expect when we saw the first video, but then our thoughts completely changed. --Shilton12 10:26, 24 September 2010 (EDT)

In the Aquarium with Steph

Observing Fishbrains in Action with The Buzz Buzz Boom, by Seth Gore

  • Dean, MaryAnn, Uncle Richard, Jerry, Pops, God, Gaya, Jesus
  • Uncle Richard's Thunderbird is a timeless classic -- him and Dean have different views
  • Was Dean raped or abused by Uncle Richard? -- Is Uncle Richard deaf or is Dean deaf?
  • Uncle Richard is ashamed he cannot "hear the roar of the engine"
  • "He always see's what she says, he never hears her" (Dean in relation to MaryAnn)

Theory Determines Interpretation

  1. The category our group had to search for in the library was in section 727.3. Luckily, for us, it was on the 23rd floor! When we got there we discovered that it was in the Science/Medical section. 727.3 specifically focused on communication between a doctor and their patient. Some of the books discussed how vital communication between a doctor and patient is. By communicating you show compassion, and from that compassion you build trust where a true relationship can develop.
  2. We believe this information relates to Seth Gore's story because it shows how truly important communicating is toward building any kind of relationship. Also, by doing so a form of trust is created, and it can improve the quality of "care" or love being provided. Also, through language a transformation effects the experience entirely because it gets rid of the discomfort. Communication is a huge tool when trying to go through any type of therapy.
  3. It mostly seems to relate to MaryAnn and Dean. Dean is obviously uncomfortable about his relationship with MaryAnn, and he seems to have some small trust issues. This all seems to change throughout the story when Dean and MaryAnn communicate about their insecurities regarding each other, and from it they emerge as a serious couple. This somewhat relates to a doctor/patient because in order for immense care to be provided their needs to be trust in the relationship regardless if it is romantic, or strictly business.
  4. What our section seemed to ignore was how there was so much going on in the story that didn't match the section we were assigned at all. This story was extremely hard to decipher, and our group tried to make it our own by using our own ideas of what the story could be about.
  5. We found it be a very interesting way to examine Seth's story. There are so many ways to view the story, but our section was relevant because it shows how communication is essential when building any type of relationship. The doctor/patient approach is also somewhat relevant because like love, taking the care of one's life into your own hands is intense. This relates to the amount of commitment Dean probably felt when thinking about getting serious with MaryAnn, but through communication he realized that he was ready for the next step.
  6. No, we decided it not to be a recommendation because this story was hard to decipher because there are so many different meanings according to how you see the text. As a class going over the actual meaning of this story would be very helpful because then we as a class could have a discussion (communicate), and together decide what is hidden in the text. --Shilton12 20:31, 23 September 2010 (EDT)

Thunder leads to BOOMING CommClass

  • Thunder was the night before first Comm Class
  • We all thought it was too loud to be thunder, and all of our windows were open so it was so loud
  • You cannot see the thunder
  • We all felt the same way about it -- we all were intrigued in the conversation, but all had different experiences with thunder
  • Storm caused a boom in the classroom
  • To story: all different opinions just like Uncle Richard and Dean with the Thunderbird
  • COMM118 is an exaggeration of what we expected
  • One noise can spark so many emotions like Dean with the sound of the engine
  • Is the car or the interaction important?
  • That thunder will now trigger an emotion or memory for all of us
  • We all never felt thunder like that before

Steph Conversing with us through Feedback

Understanding the Lifelike Pedagogy

What I wrote about:

  • The "Learning by Lifelike Pedagogy" video has a lot to do with our class, and its set-up. The video discusses how instead of learning the old, boring, standard, traditional way ... the student should in fact decide what they are going to learn, as a class they will choose what their topic will be. From that the teacher and students can build off one another, and the student ends up learning about what they want, and it is more fun for them. This ties into our class because one the first day Steph asked us what we wanted to learn. She asked us if we wanted tests, homework, projects, etc. Obviously being lazy college students we said we did not want any of those. We discussed as a class, and through communicating we somewhat built our own syllabus for the class. I guess the differences would be how we keep it somewhat a classroom, and do not completely give us students all the power. UmassWiki was not on "pedagogy" but we'll look past that. It seems the point is to learn about interpersonal communication on somewhat of our own terms. This class is definitely not what any of us expected, but through all the arguing and group work we are building relationships through discussion which is vital for real life.

What Steph had to say:

  • --> she discussed group and the individual, and how we will do this as a class?
  • she underlined "learning about what we want to learn" and she said "nice, you captured the interaction!"
  • When I discussed how we are lazy college students, she responded with "Is it possible that I took advantage of suspecting you might not want these things" which could potentially mean that was a test in itself
  • I used a bit of sarcasm about the wiki, and Steph responded with "LOL" which means she picked up on how I was being sarcastic about how it has been a struggle
  • I said how we "somewhat" built the class on our own terms, and Steph saying from that "somewhat" we built a syllabus, the classroom, and made the class on our own terms

My response to the grade ... What does this mean?

  • Overall I was pleased with my score because I put a lot of effort into the response and Steph seemed to have some positive feedback. There were a lot of smiley faces and exclamation points which could mean that she was excited about what I had to say. This class is not what any of us expected, but I feel through group dynamic we have been building a more healthy atmosphere to work in, and I feel we will eventually get into the groove of things.

Marking Discipline

Steph's Feedback

  • "Why the hesitation hinting uncertainty?"
  • "has a certain significance" (underlined)
  • "Effects vary, don't limit to a few possibilities!"
  • ":)"
  • "difference" (underlined)
  • "uniqueness shapes outcome" (underlined)
  • "This is a great example but mainly because it is a bit off ... there are lots of times I want your attention, why/how was I different this time than others? Actually you did say it - I was upset. And you also identified that the context was marked showing the admin which usually doesn't happen!"
  • "interesting distinction!"
  • "focusing" (underlined)

Steph's Responses in Relation to My Quotes

  • I said, "It seems ...", and this is where Steph says, "Why the hesitation hinting uncertainty?"
  • I said, "...has a certain significance", and this is where Steph says, "Effects vary, don't limit to a few possibilities!"
  • I said, "...difference", and this is where Steph says, ":)"
  • I said, "From being marked we all realized and learned to watch our grammar errors. She was trying to get our attention.", and this is where Steph says, "This is a great example but mainly because it is a bit off ... there are lots of times I want your attention, why/how was I different this time than others? Actually you did say it - I was upset. And you also identified that the context was marked showing the admin which usually doesn't happen!"
  • I said, "Our class does not lack discipline because we respect each other and the teacher", and this is where Steph says, "Interesting distinction!"

Communication Theory/IPC Understanding

  • I feel this most definitely ties into what I studied for the midterm, which was question #26 which talked a lot about anticipated response in the interpersonal communication process. Our class everyday deals with the whole idea of anticipated response. When Steph makes a statement, or proposes a thought to the class, in return she is expecting an answer. Usually, in our class, it is common for that answer to go completely away from what she expected, or she does not receive an answer at all. I feel this ties into the discipline aspect of my answer because our class always goes against what is expected and it completely alters the conversation every time someone makes a point that everyone agrees on. For example, if Steph were to discipline us in a way we are not used to, she ultimately would be expecting us to listen to her in response. Because we are not used to that type of attitude in the classroom, we might go away from what Steph anticipated, and this could lead to her next getting angry, and this changing the flow of the conversation completely. Anticipated response is everything I believe when it comes to any conversation whether marked, or disciplinary.

Extra Credit Thus Far

Pizza Party IPC

  • UmassWiki. Although I have had such great experiences with it thus far, when I ventured off to Thompson Hall one fine evening, I was surprised to find out that no one else besides our class had any idea what “UmassWiki” was. From what I did learn about the other class was that their teacher is incredibly boring. Apparently he discusses how “ancient Greece” has something to do with communications, and for all I know it does, but according to the other class it is unbearably boring. It was a strange coincidence because the girl I approached had the exact same major as me, I have not met anyone on my floor who wants to be a broadcast journalist. The other class is also a lot larger than our class because it is not through a RAP, so instead of working one on one with the teacher and students like we do, they have to endure yet another lecture on information that seems completely irrelevant to them. The lecture is long, boring, and repetitive, and it is hard to enjoy the topic because it is so hard to follow what the teacher is actually teaching. When I brought up the “UmassWiki” the girl looked at me like I had just sneezed. I explained to her the adventures of what we had been doing in class, and how we were all struggling trying to decipher this website. Although I do not necessarily enjoy being confused with the Wiki, I would much rather endure the horrors of that opposed to not understanding a teacher while he lectures for an hour. Going to the pizza party was a lot more interesting then I thought it was going to be. I am happy that I got to meet people in another class, but also, I am happy I finally met someone with my exact major. I met my peer advisor for the department, and I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. But the best part of it all was the pizza. The pizza was incredible.
