The writer of “Hunger as Ideology” is Susan Bordo. Susan researches historical contexts, the media, and other situations that many give the idea that women should not eat very much. She takes the position of a leader of a teacher who is trying to inform others that the media gives off false information. She is trying to let people know what the right thing is so that women can become healthier. In a sense, Bordo is a role model or is trying to be because she is aware that everyone listens to what the media and other sources say. This clearly shows your opinion and the beginning of your arguement, it is clear you agree with the author.Bordo’s argument is that the media, society and past experiences have made women believe that they are not supposed to eat as much as men. She explains that there is sexism in ads such as Virginia Slims and that when it comes to food it is all about men. Bordo is trying to get across that figures such as Kate Moss are impossible standards to meet in a healthy manner and that the media should not be promoting unhealthy actions. Bordo identifies herself as being against what women are “supposed” to be like. She is a level-headed woman in a society that is lopsided. Bordo is trying to make women everywhere see what she sees. “I encourage my students to bring in examples that appear to violate traditional gender dualities and ideological messages contained in them.” (pg ) This statement shows Bordo’s position as a teacher. She tries to expose the corruption of the media to young people before it becomes a problem. “When I was a teenager in the 1960s, Twiggy’s mascara-spiked star and long, spindly legs represented our variant of the wide-eyed waif. We envied Twiggy’s casual cool and elegantly elongated body.” (pg 192)These quotes support your ideas about the author but you need to say if they are ethos, pathos, or logos.
The audience of “Hunger as Ideology” is all of the American society, even though it is mostly geared towards women. This essay also allows men to see what the media is doing and even though it doesn’t stress the point, Bordo is saying that men are living up to the media’s standards by being the typical “macho man.” It exposes the reality of the messages that the media is sending and corrupts teens all over the country. “Today young women and men no longer experience much of a distinction between the commercially fabricated, artfully arranged images that surround them.” “In 1990, women students of mine complain of the tortures of the cafeteria, the embarrassment of eating ice cream in front of the male students, the pressure to just take a salad, or, better yet, refuse food altogether.” This quote further proves that this essay is geared more towards women and that women are more self-conscious of their body than men are because of the media. Good job using quotes as evidence to explain the audience.
The subject of this essay is the advertisements that are made. They are found as sexist and geared to make women seem as if they should be super skinny and that men should love food. According to these advertisements, women should only eat in small portions. “Women are permitted to lust for food itself only when they are pregnant or when it is clear they have been near starvation…” page 195 “Women with eating disorders bring photos of…Kate Moss.” (pg 192) Women are influenced by celebrities that are not being healthy to be the size they are. Kate Moss is an incredibly skinny person, however not many sourced know if she is skinny for positive reasons. You did a good job not only explaining the subject but also the significance of the subject and why the author cares about it.

I think you did a good job picking out quotes that support your idea of the author, audience, and subject. The one thing you did not include is if each quote relates to pathos, logos, or ethos. You already have a clear personal opinion- you have started forming your arguement and you seem to strongly agree with the author. Other than not including ethos, pathos, and logos I think you did a good job with this assignment. You also have a good start for you paper especially since you have already formed your arguement and opinion about the author. Kathleenw 21:30, 25 October 2006 (EDT)
