[edit] No Excuses, No Lies, No Buffoonery

I am Marco. I made this because I am a student at UMASS and that's that. I use this Wiki for a class that I'm taking right now but the more and more I use the Wiki, the more and more I enjoy using it. It's very nifty.

[edit] Stuff That You Should Check Out. Right now.

  • The United Nations is pretty cool and they do a lot of work to make sure that the world keeps revolving at a decently fast pace.
    • If you want to know what the UN is doing right now, check this out. It's the UN News Feed.
  • The BBC news network is probably one of my favorite places for learning all sorts of international news.
  • Digg offers user-selected news. Fast breaking news often hits this site before most major news networks because it is so heavily trafficked by people from around the world.
  • CNN usually has good US news but lately they've been going towards a more sensationalist slant that's really goddamn annoying.
  • FIFA is the international governing body of soccer or football, depending upon your geographic locale.
  • Red Sox Nation is growing ever larger and I'll be a fan until the end existence.

[edit] Perspectives and Philosophical Ruminations on Nothing in Particular

I've chosen to take the perspective depicted in the article "Blowing Things into Proportion". Something about that particular perspective appealed to me and I really don't know why but I care to speculate so I will. I enjoy relating trends and ideas to their smaller causal factors. It's what I will probably end up doing as a politician, if I become a politician. It's interesting to think that amazingly small details, such as the way someone dresses, talks or even eats, are directly affected by their surroundings and ideals. Conversely, that person's surroundings and the ideals of those around that person are affected by those same small details of that one person. I suppose it's very much like that idea (I don't remember the name: it's either the Chaos Theory or the Butterfly Effect) where a butterfly flaps its wings in China and the tiny amount of air displaced by the wing beats of that butterfly causes a massive hurricane to spawn on the other side of the world. It's really sort of a vastly huge and infinitely possible train of thought and that's appealing to me. I'm a deeply thoughtful dude, and when the amount of thinking that I can complete about one topic is unlimited... That's pretty awesome. Marco 16:19, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

[edit] What I Hath Wrought

An assignment for the above mentioned (and linked) class was writing an introduction for one of my classmates. Luckily for me, I was assigned to write about this crazy-cool girl named Christine. This is the original essay plus or minus a couple revision states.

[edit] A Change in the Horizon

(Blowing things into proportion)

Marco Cross is eighteen years old. He is a complex man majoring in Political Science. His dream is to become a butt kicking politician. Knowing where Marco is going with his life reveals us parts of his identity. Marco Cross is not scared to get his hands dirty, he is bright, intelligent and can handle big responsibilities. Marco is not pleased with the world and hopes to use these skills and his power as a politician in the future and improve this terrible world we live in. Marco Cross was born in Boston but lives in Framingham, Ma. He is the oldest kid in his family and has a younger sister named Mia. Family is important to Marco even though he is more friend-oriented, and with politics in his mind he is determined to make the life of his friends and his family better. Marco likes to use his brains more than his muscles, one of the reasons why he chose political science as a major, so sports are not his forte, unless you are talking about table tennis because then you are looking at a future Olympics champion. He likes to spend his time reading books, painting, and playing hard music on his guitar. Marco Cross likes to make movies and if politics do not make him rich enough he can always be a movie director.

Marco also likes to party and have a good time with his friends. This is one of the reasons why Marco Cross came to UMass, but fortunately not the only reason. Marco Cross came here to be independent, get a good education, and get away from the food market job he worked in Framingham, stocking shelves. It is like having Einstein writing English papers, not his thing.

Marco Cross has a lot of politician traits. He is a real problem solver and can tackle anything thrown at him. He has a distinct logical system. When most of us encounter a problem we picture ourselves in the problem and then we go from there and try to solve them. However Marco Cross removes himself as much as possible from the problem and looks at it from outside. Unlike a lot of people he thinks outside the box. If he likes it, than that is the action he takes and if not, than he thinks of another plan.

Marco Cross has traveled all over Europe. Italy is his favorite place. He has seen more than the average person his age, giving him a better view of the world and also an advantage for when he becomes a politician. There is something peculiar about Marco’s travels. These voyages are not the “tourist” kind of travel where they just go and see places. Marco is not like everyone else; he enjoys challenging himself. When he and his family travel, they try to survive in their destination of choice. They enjoy the struggle of establishing themselves. If he were to go to France with his family he would try to find a job rent a house and live like a French citizen instead of a tourist. That is what makes Marco stand out from everyone else. He is not confined to the typical American lifestyle. He has seen different parts of the world giving him a head start in his future politician career.

Marco is very outgoing and likes to be friends with everyone. In class he shows leadership values. Marco’s ability to publically talk to people makes him look like he’s directing the whole wiki project. Talking to the public so easily will be more than a required skill for when he become a politician. He does not like liars or dishonest people. He values honesty, kindness, and intelligence. Marco Cross likes people that could carry out decent conversations. Marco is someone who tries to learn from everyone. He is not someone who just sits and analyzes people. He takes what he feels is valuable and applies it to his everyday life. His leadership ability helps him adapt fast to his environment and makes it easy for him to start over when he needs to (living in different places).

Marco Cross strongly values his character and stands by his ideas. He feels there is nothing in the world worth for him to change the way he is. He sticks to his values and principles no matter what other people feel. He is consistent in his personality in that he is a genuine person with everyone. He does not care if people like him or not and he will not change for anyone. It seems illogical to him to pretend that you are someone else while in reality being a completely different person. There is one event that will always be on Marco Cross’s mind, 9/11. 9/11 was a real eye opener for Marco. It was the first time he realized that the world was a lot bigger. The government keeps us in the dark about their actions. Investigating this complex world is a major reason why Marco wants to be a politician. He wants to be involved in society and tackle problems that ordinary people just do not have the power to handle. Marco is not the type of person that likes to focus only in one thing. He would rather know little about a lot, then just a lot of one thing. That makes Marco a really opened minded person.

Marco realizes that becoming a politician is going to be the wildest adventure he has been on, full of disappointments and disillusionments about the society we live in today. There is not a better time for Marco to become a politician considering all the turmoil around the world today. Knowing that he has traveled the world, and seen a different view of the political system will definitely be a plus in his career as a politician.

After getting to know him you would realize that students like Marco Cross will make a change in the world someday. Getting to know him as an individual is an extremely enriching experience in that he shows you a different way of living and thinking. Many bumps in the road brought him to where he is today, but one thing is for sure, he is a stronger and more intelligent person. Everyone in the class should take advantage of getting to know him because ultimately they are gaining intelligent opinions about issues in the world today and maybe even gaining a friend. [edit] A Paper Promoting Change

This is a copy of a paper that I wrote about affecting change in the American political system. It has become obvious over time that the youth do not vote nearly as much as they should, and this is a problem that needs to be addressed by the practitioners of politics themselves.

This is the link to the paper.

[edit] The Year In Summation and Some Final Thoughts

Throughout the year, we (as a class) were asked to reflect upon our learnings and thoughts in ENG112. This is the full text of the final letter that I wrote.
