User:Esco/Esco's Unit 3 Paper
From UMassWiki
Summary
For my unit 3 paper I plan to write about the consequences that students receive at Umass for possession of marijuana. I think that it should be less for people that had less than a ounce and especially consequences should be lessened if it was off campus and nowhere near a school zone. This problem effects many students and has a negative effect on their life and could cause worse outcomes. I think that this is a problem for many students because in college students are experiencing lots of nbew things and are overwhelmed with the freedom that they have. This could cause the student to try new things and without any experience they could find themselves in a lot of trouble. For first offense students the university should be more lenient towards the student in the sense that it was there first mistake. If the incident persists then the school should take more action and harder consequences but for first timers they should be given a second chance to redeem and better themselves from learning from their past mistakes.
- ok, now let's think this through. Who you going to write to here at UMass? And what will their objections be? What jumps to my mind is that the school cannot override state or federal law, so you'll have to do some legal research. Are there reasons (precedent) that allow (in Massachusetts), universities (or places of higher education) to alter/avoid the law? So, consider your audience carefully, WHO can really make a difference on this issue? I'm thinking the state legislature, or maybe even a particular committee. This is a great topic and you will be able to find much info but it will take some effort to sift through it all and write clear, concise, with persuasion.
