The UMass Chapter of the Campus Antiwar Network or CAN, is the local chapter of a national student based antiwar group. The UMass Chapter of the Campus Antiwar Network formed in the fall of 2007 out of the protests against the honorary degree that was awarded to former Bush Administration Chief of Staff Andrew Card by the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the spring of 2007. Participants in the movement to revoke the honorary degree to Andrew Card came together to form a chapter of the Campus Antiwar Network in the hopes to sustain the energy that had been created in opposition to Andrew Card's nomination for an honorary degree. The University of Massachusetts Chapter of the Campus Antiwar Network also has members who are students at other Universities in the Five College Area, including from Smith College and Hampshire College.

The UMass Chapter of the Campus Anti-War Network is committed to building the student anti-war movement at all campuses in the Pioneer Valley and beyond. CAN's main goal is to build the student anti-war movement,whether it be through protest, education, petitioning, or lobbying with the long term goal of ending the war in Iraq and brining the troops home.

The Campus Antiwar Network is the largest and leading independent, democratic, grassroots network of students opposing the occupation of Iraq and military recruiters in our schools at campuses all over the country. Since CANs formation before the war in Iraq began, it has had an unapologetic opposition to the U.S. government's project of conquest and plunder in the Middle East, along with its horrible consequences at home.

CAN's goal is to unite all antiwar students on colleges and high schools alike to democratically build a broad antiwar and counter-recruitment movement to help bring the troops home now. To this end, they've had a strong presence at every national antiwar demonstration and continue to build countless local actions. They've also had national and regional activist conferences and toured GI war resisters around the country.
