UMass Dorset Sheep Group

From UMassWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The UMass Dorset Sheep Group is a student group within the Animal Science major that assists in the management of UMass' flock of registered Dorset sheep. The flock resides at Hadley Farm, and there are currently around 50 ewes, and 2 breeding rams. The students assist in hoof trimming, deworming, ear tagging, vaccinating, and lambing maintenance (crutching out, tail docking, paint branding, etc.) The UMass Dorset Sheep Group breeds for spring and fall lambing and had three lambs born in Fall 2005. Spring 2006 is predicted to be very busy when it comes to lambing because the majority of the ewes are bred for February through April lambing. The Sheep Group encourages interested parties to stop by the Livestock Barn at Hadley Farm to meet the flock.
