UMassWiki.com Receives Major Upgrades
Amherst, MA, 5/26/2007 – After 21 months of operation as UMass Amherst's student-run web encyclopedia, UMassWiki.com received major upgrades at the end of Spring 2007 semester.
“We'd been having issues with the wiki being slow for some time,” said Gordon Morehouse, the site's operator. “Because classes are taught using the wiki, that was unacceptable, so we upgraded. The server where UMassWiki lives on the Internet is now much more powerful.”
With the upgrade, UMassWiki.com is ready for a large influx of traffic when classes resume in the fall, both from regular users and students in Communications grad student Stephanie Jo Kent's classes who will use the wiki for their homework.
The site also launched a new look at the same time, proudly displaying a UMass inspired color scheme of maroon, gray and white. Previously, the site looked almost exactly like Wikipedia, its much larger and more famous cousin. “We decided it was time to stand out,” Morehouse said, “and what better way than by displaying our school colors?”
UMassWiki.com is a leading student-run wiki for a higher education community. Along with wikis at Columbia University (WikiCU), Oberlin College (OberWiki) and Duke University (Duiki), UMassWiki is one of the most actively developed student wikis in the nation.
Gordon Morehouse is a 2007 Computer Science graduate from UMass. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon.
