Thanks to the COM352 students for contributing a bunch of new pages! I'll be moving these pages into the main area of the wiki soon.

Content ownership and Creative Commons license
The License
Content on UMassWiki is released by Smart Cat Media under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 2.5 license (the License). This License, in brief, states that content may be used freely for noncommercial purposes so long as the owner is credited.
Read the license. Content you submit may be used by Smart Cat Media for commercial purposes related directly to UMassWiki, and by anyone for noncommercial purposes, so long as UMassWiki is credited (in the case of text) or you are credited (in the case of Multimedia).
General content
Original text submitted by you becomes the property of Smart Cat Media, which releases it under the License. Original images, audio, video, computer programs, or similar content, collectively known as Multimedia content, submitted by you remains your property, but you grant Smart Cat Media permission to distribute it under the License, though you may opt out of this as described below in section 2.
By submitting content to UMassWiki, you agree that such content will be released under the License, and you further agree and grant that Smart Cat Media, as the distributing entity, may make commercial use of said content in the sole purview of UMassWiki and for the promotion or advertising thereof.
Class content
Certain exceptions apply to content in the Class namespace. The Class namespace was created for the exclusive use of classes at UMass Amherst. Faculty and students may use this namespace for any purpose related to their classes.
Original content submitted by you to the Class namespace is released by default under the License but does not become the property of Smart Cat Media. Further, Smart Cat Media may not use this content for the promotion or advertising of UMassWiki without your additional permission.
If you wish to reserve all rights to your class-related content such as original essays or multimedia works, you may do so. Please stamp your content with Template:ClassCopyright by adding {{ClassCopyright}} to the page to display a copyright message.
User page content
Certain exceptions apply to content posted on User Pages (the User namespace). UMassWiki offers each registered user a personal page, or User Page, on which to post content of that user's choice.
Original content submitted by you to the User namespace is released by default under the License but does not become the property of Smart Cat Media. Further, Smart Cat Media may not use this content for the promotion or advertising of UMassWiki without your additional permission.
Retaining full rights to your Multimedia content
With regards to Multimedia content, you may grant an exclusive non-transferrable license to Smart Cat Media to use, display or otherwise feature your content on UMassWiki while still retaining full rights to your work and not releasing it under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 2.5 license. Further, Smart Cat Media may not use this content for the promotion or advertising of UMassWiki without your additional permission.
If you wish to contribute Multimedia content to UMassWiki and retain full rights, please stamp your uploads with Template:ImageByPermission by including {{ImageByPermission}} in the Image page. This will stamp the Image page with a copyright notice. You may also wish to include contact information or a web site so that interested parties may contact you about using your content.
Uploading content from external sources
If you're not sure if you have permission to copy content from an external source and add it to UMassWiki, don't add it.
Any content which you don't own cannot be uploaded to UMassWiki unless it is used by permission (and noted as such where placed) or unless it is public domain or licensed under a compatible license. The GFDL license and certain Creative Commons licenses are incompatible with UMassWiki, as we reserve the right to use content on the wiki for commercial purposes, and because our Attribution-Noncommercial license forbids other commercial use of our content.
Attributed excerpts of content from external sites are allowable under fair use, but wholesale copying and pasting of large sections of text or photos without permission is not allowed.
