UMassWiki:Advertising
From UMassWiki
UMassWiki runs text ads in the sidebar of many pages on the site. These text ads are a great low-cost way to reach University of Massachusetts Amherst students exclusively starting as low as 10 cents per day. When you place an ad on UMassWiki, your ad is shown on every ad-enabled page all the time -- it's never rotated with other competing ads. Best yet, you can create and pay for an ad in just minutes. As soon as we approve your ad, it will run for its full duration at the time of your choosing. You can purchase ads in advance.
RSOs, community outreach programs, and any branch of UMass Amherst itself may be eligible for a substantial discount. See below.
Click here, scroll to the bottom and enter passcode deepdiscount to purchase a 15-day ad for just 10 cents a day.

[edit] Goals
Our goal with our advertising, besides helping to cover our operating costs, is to provide content which is of interest to the UMass community. Our ultimate goal is to run the following types of ads 100% of the time:
- Ads for local businesses, organizations and services
- Regional and national ads which are of specific interest to UMass Amherst students
Like the rest of the site, we'd like our advertising to be a service to the community, not an annoyance.
[edit] How to buy
Click here to order an ad. If you have a passcode for a discount, scroll to the bottom first and enter it. The rest should be self-explanatory. Contact User:GMorehou for help if needed.
[edit] Important notes
- The preview screenshot may look missing or incorrect. This is a problem with Alexa and does not indicate anything about the reliablity of UMassWiki or the visibility of your ad. (We've submitted a request that it be updated but so far it hasn't.)
- The "average clicks" indicated for a particular number of days is really low. Don't be fooled! This is because during the periods that no one local buys an ad, we run "network ads" which get far fewer clicks than ads of local interest. While we of course can't guarantee any number of clicks for your ad, ads with local interest tend to receive more clicks than "network ads."
[edit] How much exposure will my ad get?
Traffic is variable depending on the time of year. When you buy an ad, AdBrite will give you a rough estimate of the number of views per day and number of unique visitors per day. You may also want to check out these details about traffic on UMassWiki.
Advertising is not displayed on pages where users are unlikely to click on ads (for example Special:Recentchanges).
[edit] Discounts
In keeping with our "local interest preferred" goals, we currently offer the following discounts. Just contact User:GMorehou (
) with the details of your ad for a password to purchase discounted ads. To be eligible for the discounts you must purchase a 7 day ad or greater. The minimum cost for an ad is $1. Percentage discounts are separate from any other special discounts.
- RSOs receive 50% off.
- Community outreach programs receive 50% off. We make the sole determination as to who is eligible, and all decisions are final.
- Official entities of UMass Amherst receive 25% off.
- State and local government agencies receive 25% off.
- Businesses headquartered within 15 miles of the 01003 ZIP code receive 25% off.
[edit] Ad placement
Currently, we only offer ads in the right-hand sidebar. These ads are not displayed on pages where they are unlikely to generate clicks. For example, ads are not displayed in the editor or on "special pages" used to control or interact with the site.
[edit] Ad content policies
We reserve the right to refuse any ad for any reason, with or without grounds. Types of ads specifically not accepted at UMassWiki include but are not limited to:
- Ads for products or services which are illegal under federal, state or local statues.
- Patently offensive ads.
- Sexually explicit ads.
- Tasteful ads for sexual aids and products may be allowed on a case-by-case basis.
- Drug, alcohol and tobacco ads with the following exceptions:
- Ads for local pubs and alcohol-related businesses are generally allowed.
- Ads for drug, alcohol or tobacco treatment are allowed.
- Ads for political groups supporting (or opposing) changes to drug laws are allowed.
- Ads for "harm reduction" services such as DanceSafe are allowed.
- Occasionally prescription drug ads may slip in from our "network advertisers." These are allowed.
