Student Health Insurance Plan
From UMassWiki
You can help UMassWiki by adding to it. Even if you don't know wiki markup, it's okay. Just click the edit link or tab, type what you want, and somebody will come along and clean things up if it doesn't look pretty.
UMassWiki survives on contributions from people just like you.The Student Health Insurance Plan at UMass Amherst is the extended insurance plan which covers services not included in the mandatory Basic Health Plan including "hospitalization and specialty care not covered by the Basic Health plan." If you have your own health insurance, the SHIP can be waived. However, due to Massachusetts state law, if you do not have your own health insurance, you must pay for the Student Health Insurance Plan.
The extended coverage at UMass is administered by Chickering/Aetna. Compared to some universities of similar size, the extended plan at UMass is very good. This may be because the Graduate Employees Organization banded together and lobbied for a good health plan at some time in the past (someone please verify and cite this statement).
Detailed information on coverage is available from Chickering at http://www.chickering.com/schools/umamherst/brochure0708.pdf
