Sam the Minuteman is our awesome school mascot, even though he sort of looks like a zombie. Sam placed second in the 2005 Capital One Mascot Of The Year competition, next to Nebraska's Herbie the Husker. Freshman became highly aware of Sam the Minuteman during the New Students Welcome Day when he provided the entire incoming class with a source of entertainment during a highly boring time by belly flopping onto the stage, sliding into the curtain, and then clapping his hands until everyone finally clapped along. Sam does not speak, and most likely never will, as he lacks the ability to form words and sentences because his mouth is made of a plastic material. However, due to recent scientific advances in the area of mascot communication deficiencies, Sam may one day speak.
