Republican Club
From UMassWiki
The UMass Republican Club is a conservative student group which organizes speaking events and video presentations, campaigns for Republican candidates, and participates in political activism. The club is widely seen as the organization which will host those events that the university itself should but won't -- the club recently hosted a debate between two professors (moderated by a third) over US policy in Iraq.
The club is often seen as THE group which will respond to public concerns, most recently being that of offensive sexually explicit pictures of male sexual intercourse publicly displayed by the RSU. Mid-level administrators and untenured faculty often ask the UMRC to act in cases where they cannot.
The club is located in room 423B in the Student Union and meets Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM.
The current president of the club is Brad DeFlumeri.
In the past, the Republican Club has hosted speakers such as Phyllis Shafley, Mike Adams, Ben Stein, Dinesh D'Souza, David French, David Yeagely, Ray Drake, Tammy Bruce, David Horowitz and Ward Connerly. They have screened such films as "FAHRENhype 9/11" and "Obsession".
The Republican Club has held a pro-Walmart rally in counterprotest of numerous anti-Walmart rallies and had an abortion graveyard to protest the act of abortion. A second abortion graveyard is scheduled for May of 2007. The club has also rallied in defense of Military Recruitment and in opposition to the student strike.
The club recently held a rally in support of ROTC, see http://www.cbs3springfield.com/news/local/6387442.html
