Thanks to the COM352 students for contributing a bunch of new pages! I'll be moving these pages into the main area of the wiki soon.

OITunix

From UMassWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

OITunix is UMass's oldest Internet provision. Dating to the days when Internet was relegated to campuses and the government, OITunix offers users a UNIX shell and personal web space for UMass students and faculty.

[edit] Facilities

While once reachable by modem, now it can only be accessed via Internet using SSH. Besides having basic UNIX facilities, it provides Pine for checking e-mail and Lynx for checking the web. It used to offer TIN for reading Usenet, but that was taken down in 2006. Also unavailable is printing; that was taken down several years ago.

While OITunix could ostensibly be used for day to day web browsing and e-mail writing, it is mostly now used for the creation of webpages and the teaching of Unix in a classroom setting. It runs on a Sun server, and can be reached by SSH at oitunix.oit.umass.edu. For Windows users, a standard "telnet" client such as the one bundled with Windows will not work. A more advanced program, such as Putty, is required to connect to the machine. OS X and Linux users can use 'ssh' in a terminal instance.

[edit] UPDATE

As of August 2007, OIT has discontinued OITUnix. The web hosting portion of the service is being replaced by webadmin.oit.umass.edu. Any member of the campus community can use SFTP or SSH to reach the new server and have their pages published to http://people.umass.edu, http://courses.umass.edu, or http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu. The file-storage portion of OITUnix has been replaced by the UDrive, accessable at https://udrive.oit.umass.edu.
