Mary Lyon is a co-ed residential hall in the Northeast residential area. It is part of the Knowlton, Mary Lyon and Crabtree cluster. The local cluster office is in Crabtree. Mary Lyon also houses the 2 in 20 Floor.
Mary Lyon is a four floor building located about two seconds from the dining commons; you practically roll out of bed and into the food. There is an area with lovely benches and crabapple trees right outside which is an amazing place to smoke. For the most part, this dorm is quiet on weekdays, and mornings when everyone has a hangover. Well, except for the smoking bench outside. The weekends are another story entirely.
The Mary Lyon bench is a staple of the Mary Lyon community. Situated between the Crabtree and Mary Lyon dorms under two flowering trees, it is a perfect place for residents to gather and smoke, and is naturally littered with cigarette butts. The picnic table has been removed by the school a few times, probably in an effort to stop the drinking and smoking that goes on there well into the night on the weekends. However, Mary Lyoners have brought it back with enough protest, and it continues to be a social center for the dorm.
Mary Lyon will be another host for the Freshman plague starting September 2008. It is a sad event for all parties involved and will result in serious declines of awesome.
Mary Lyon is one of three dorms with a two-word name; the others are John Adams and Van Meter. John Quincy Adams is the only one with a three-word name.
[edit] Legend
The dorm is also home to the Mary Lyon Ghost. According to legend, in the early 1970s a girl hanged herself in the back hallway of the dorm, and now her ghost haunts the buildings' halls. Doors in the long hallways have been known to open by themselves (although this is probably caused by a slight natural unevenness in the building), and there have been rumors of ghost sightings over the years.
