Lofting
From UMassWiki
You can maximize space in your dorm room by lofting your bed. Availability of lofting kits is limited so get your requests in early.
If you would like to turn the two bed in your new dorm room into bunk beds, you will need the lofting kit and the instructions. However, in certain dorms, the beds are relatively easy to raise and lower without any tools. You may need a friend's help, however. Read these instructions first:
- First, take the mattress off the bed.
- Next, turn the bed frame on it's side. Examine the frame and realize that the metal part of the bed attaches to the wooden legs by hooking onto the pegs inside the track of the wooden legs. **If this is not the case, it's the wrong kind of bed and you actually do need tools!**
- (CAREFULLY!) Separate the wooden legs from the metal bedframe by pushing the metal frame up... or what would be "up" if the bed was standing upright. This might take a little bit of force if it doesnt work on the first try.
- Reset the bed's level by moving the metal frame to a different set of pegs. Make sure the legs are even!
- Make sure the metal frame is securely attached to the legs in the new position.
- Turn the bed upright again and make sure it's not going to collapse before putting the mattress back on and jumping on it.
Information and instructions for lofting the beds are available here from the UMass Housing web site:
