Greeno Sub Shop

From UMassWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The Greeno Sub Shop is the student-run business of the Central residential area, located in the basement of Greenough. It offers a selection of sub sandwiches (grilled and non-grilled), quesadillas, nachos and various snacks, ice cream, and beverages. It is open from 5-11:30 PM from Sunday to Thursday. Cash, YCMP and UCard are all accepted at the counter.

"Greeno" is not a misspelling of "Greenough" but rather a play on words. It most likely refers to the restaurant's nature-oriented atmosphere ("green-o;" although it is not by any means a strictly vegetarian or Vegan establishment). This is evidenced by its trippy decoration style and its mission statement: "Greeno tries to be as sustainable as possible by supporting local vendors, creating the least amount of waste, composting, recycling and making as many homemade products as we can!" Additionally, the misspelling could be a nod to the Massachusetts practice of eliminating the "-ugh" from town names (i.e. "Marlboro" instead of "Marlborough," etc).

On November 11th, 2006, Greeno Sub Shop began its own delivery service, catering to all nine Central dorms. The service was run for free, from 6-10 PM, with a $5 minimum order and with tips strongly encouraged. The service was intended on a trial basis through November 23rd, 2006, and the restaurant will use the results of this trial to determine whether or not to open a full-time delivery service for the Spring 2007 semester. It is unknown whether this permanent service would also be free of charge.
