The Comparative Literature Department at UMass Amherst specializes in the interdisciplinary study of literature from various cultures. As part of UMass Amherst's transition to a top-tier research university in the 1960s, it was founded by Irving Rothberg of the Spanish and Portuguese Department, Eva Schiffer of the German Department, Paul Mankin of the French Department, and Alex Page of the English Department.

The Comp-Lit department is headquartered in Herter Hall, mostly on the 3rd and 4th floors with the Spanish and Portuguese Department.
