Thanks to the COM352 students for contributing a bunch of new pages! I'll be moving these pages into the main area of the wiki soon.

Class:Section 71 - ENG 112 - Spring 2007/Day 5

From UMassWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Today’s activities:

  1. Turn in first drafts of your Personal Identity Narrative.
  2. Quiz
  3. Brainstorm: effective feedback has what qualities? (Review your ‘free write’ from last class.)
  4. Read a peer’s paper – comment liberally.
  5. Question paper (free write): what tells you about the character/identity of the author? What point is the author trying to make? How does the author go about it?
  6. Interview Activity – Ask your partner about their narrative, delving beyond the basic details of biography: in addition to the facts, help your partner consider what audience he or she will write to, what message she or he wants to impart, and how s/he wants the writing itself to represent their identity as an author. It is your job as Peer Reviewer to help the author be effective and successful. Do this by asking questions more than by giving specific advice.
  7. Freewrite (time permitting)

Class on Thursday, February 15 will be in Goodell 613!
Be sure to bring your Penguin sign-in code.

Homework: due at the beginning of class on Thursday, February 15.

  1. Question paper (free write): for every question you have, suggest an answer, ask another question, question your own questions but always in to the point the author is trying to make. How does the author go about it?READ Conversation on Censorship and Youth Culture in the Text-Wrestling Book, pp. 415-435. Be prepared to discuss the viewpoint of each author (there are five contributions to this conversation).
  2. JOIN the UMassWiki

    3. Select “Create An Account”
    4. Follow the directions and links. Keep in mind that your “username” will be VISIBLE to The Public.
  3. Spend at least ten minutes freewriting about your strategy for re-writing your Personal Identity Narrative. Think about the strengths and weaknesses in your first draft, the feedback from your Peer, and the goals you have for the piece. What do you want it to accomplish?
