Class:Section 68, ENG112/Debrief VI

I had a series of wonderful conferences on Friday afternoon and can hardly express how excited I am about the thinking you all are doing about writing.  :-) A point that was raised repeatedly, which I want to clarify with everyone, is the intention behind my flagging ideas in your writing with the question(s) of: "identity?" "position?" "argument?"

When I jot one or more of these terms down, it is because I recognize that you ARE indicating (whether intentionally or not) whatever term I've written. At least, what I'm telling you via this feedback is that there is a potential reading of what you've written that could interpret what you wrote as an identity statement, an argumentative claim, or a way of positioning yourself in relation to either an argument or your identity. I'm trying to get you to see past the surface (if you will) of the words, to the ways that the words indicate an underlying logic, rationale, or belief system. The challenge of this assignment is to make this logic, rationale, or belief system apparent to the reader, because this is what the reader can "take home" from investing the effort, energy, and interest in actually reading your story. The goal or point of these narratives is more than just sharing information about yourself, it is to teach us (the readers) how to understand what this information means to who you are.

Questions? Please post to my usertalk page.  :-) Everyone should feel free to scan those questions and track my responses - build your knowledge! steph (COM) 11:04, 7 October 2006 (EDT)
