Homework

Kate busts Steph. Mike joins the brownnose club.

If you haven't yet signed up for an appointment, please do it yesterday.

Make an appointment with Steph or suffer awful, debilitating consequences. steph (COM) 01:59, 5 October 2006 (EDT)

DID YOU READ THE DEBRIEF? Please be sure to bring your freewriting notebooks to class on Thursday, 5 October. steph (COM) 01:59, 5 October 2006 (EDT)

Steph continues to write about YOU

Are any of you reading and thinking about this or
is it a non-issue? steph (COM) 17:55, 3 October 2006 (EDT)

One of my supervisors is quite concerned that some of you are afraid to tell me that you do not want to post your work publicly in the wiki. I do know many of you are hesitant, and I appreciate that you've been willing to take the risk so far. You do need to know - and believe - that you can tell me you simply can't/don't want to. Of course I want to persuade you to continue! I think we are doing something radical (in the sense of revolutionary), but not everyone wants to live on the radical edge (it definitely has its dangers - some of which are predictable and can be prepared for, others are random and catch you by surprise).

I don't know how many of you actually checked the post I made last week in which I included a link to the list of Introductions and another post in which I included a link to Andrew's critique of "How to run a good wiki class" (which apparently still hasn't happened? sigh).  %-/

This morning, I wrote about you again. I have all kinds of pedagogical and philosophical and political (gasp!) reasons for trying to integrate our class' wiki and my own weblog. However - this moves us (you!) even further into the public sphere (as opposed to the usually sheltered, quasi-private sphere of traditional classrooms).

Are you ok with this? You really must inform me if you are not. I won't punish you. (too much). No no, I really won't punish you at all.  :-) I can't. It's against the rules of my contract with the university and you know what? It is also against my ethics.

The Quiz

I moved all the information related to quiz question #1 to that page. Brace yourself for quiz question #2 coming up next week. :-) steph (COM) 10:06, 30 September 2006 (EDT)

Appointments with Steph

REMINDER: These are required. I've posted a sign-up sheet. First come, first served. steph (COM) 13:16, 25 September 2006 (EDT)

PS - you might want to print and bring a copy of any work that you want to discuss with me. steph (COM) 14:46, 29 September 2006 (EDT)
If you miss your appointment, you're gonna have to be seriously inventive regarding how you are going to make it up. steph (COM) 14:14, 30 September 2006 (EDT)

Student concerns to date: commas, tense, run-on sentences, strategies and/or focus for the Unit 1 personal/identity narrative, wiki lessons, the 80-page writing practice notebook, overall course criteria...

Debrief V

Folks. We did serious (thoughtful) work today. It will pay off.

Please make sure you have made an appointment with me. If there's a scheduling issue, post me a message.

Also, please be sure you have added your name to the proper Narrative option.

We have a very useful tip (and code) from the Martel. Please read and do it. Thanks Mike!

Dave, how about that tape player for Thursday?

The homework is updated. steph (COM) 18:09, 3 October 2006 (EDT)

The Future

As a class, we have some projects to complete collectively. This wiki is one of them. We will also produce a class magazine at some point: a print collection of class writings. Another goal some of you may wish to keep in mind is the end-of-semester gala known as the Hoopla.

How to run a good wiki class

To Do List

  1. Jemma, I rearranged your answer to me on your User talk page...that's how I want you to do it, ok?
  2. Andrew - please go in to your Intro of Erin and sign it with YOUR sig, not hers. I know you were working together on this, but otherwise it looks like Erin wrote about herself from another personality or something.
  3. Erin, you might want to change the section headings around so it's clear which is you writing and which is someone else.......and how about getting rid of the / in front of every link? Do you remember what you have to do? Use |
  4. Sharon, can you and Linsey clean up your User talk (discussion) page? Delete her intro of you, and move her response to you about your Intro of her to your User page. Please place it second (right after the Intro).
  5. Brian, you posted to Mike's User talk page instead of his User page. Please make the move!
  6. Andrew, you and Erin both need to write back to each other now about the introductions. Andrew, write to Erin about your response to what she wrote about you (post it on her User page). Erin, vice-versa.
  7. Adam, Mike, Jemma, Jake and Emily - your response letters concerning your Introductions are missing. These were supposed to be done during class. This is not good. Please post here when you get this done. steph (COM) 22:34, 20 September 2006 (EDT)
  8. Several of you added links for your papers for extra credit; Emily added another layer, "First Semester Papers", to the process. Here's the question, do we want all of this to be done uniformly, and if not, how soon do we allow individual variation/creativity? Remember that others (who do not know what is going on here) will have to be able to find their way around the site...
  9. Julian used an external link to respond to one of my questions! steph (COM) 00:51, 21 September 2006 (EDT)
  10. How to get Neil and Kathleen on board and up-to-speed (not exactly make-up work, but current equivalence)
  11. post links to the four pieces used in class for the small group activity on identity/position (Dave on Jemma's, Kate on Dave's, Jemma's, Dave's)
  12. post links to the three types of personal/identity essays
  13. sign up for 15-20 minute conferences with Steph in Bartlett 68
  14. link to Adam's free write
I didn't know if I should reply in the middle of the list or here...anyway I just got really confused about the Introduction letter and then realized I already posted it. A bit late but um...I did it! Magicsofa 09:41, 25 September 2006 (EDT)

Syllabus and Grading Policy

The general requirements and syllabus for all sections of English 112, including this one (#68) are available from the English Department's webpage. The required course texts are listed, along with an introduction, goals, and philosophy of this course.

The specific grading schema for Section 68 is two tiered. Half the credit revolves around points you lose for not doing the basic assignments and other commonly accepted elements of being a committed learner. The other half of credit involves the actual quality of your writing, with a particular emphasis on improvement.

Identity/Position

More on this, upcoming. Did anyone copy the notes I wrote on the board? Or keep notes for your group? If someone could post a summary of the identity/position stances for your group I'll give extra credit points. (Stock up now! Don't forget punctuation deductions coming soon to a final draft near you! You could create a new page from right here and post by group number...come on, make my day!)
