The Wall essays, Blogs, Privacy (Day 2, Sept 6)
- Warm-up: names quiz.
- Small groups: compare ideas about "The Wall".
- Turn in both copies of the essay.
- Set-up individual Wordpress weblogs and make first entry.
- Create an anonymous identity for yourself! You’ll have to tell the teacher your identity at some point in order to receive credit for the assignments you do in the blog. Make your first entry about your impressions of class so far (pros, cons, teases, benefits, critiques, considerations of what you may learn, or something along these lines.
- Create a category learning: ENG112 and be sure it is selected before you publish this post.
- Discuss class syllabus, policies, requirements, and grading.
Homework due 11 September
- Read "The Wall" essay given to you in class. Write comments to the author on the paper - focus on the clarity of ideas. Do you know what they are trying to get across? Are you confused? Show them exact sentences that really get their point across and also those that could be improved - explain why or suggest how. (Doing this thoroughly will prepare you for the next step of the homework.)
- Write a one page (250 word) summary and analysis of the paper. Do not reveal the author's identity! Tell us the author's main points, and then tell us if you agree or disagree and why. You may also include suggestions about what the author could have done to make their case more compelling, and/or tell us how the author made you think about something new. Save this document, then copy and paste it into your Wordpress blog. Categorize this review as "The Wall for ENG112" - you will have to create this new category --- if you do not add this category label then I won't be able to find it to give you credit! (that would suck)
- Spend at least an hour looking through the wikis that have preceded you: Previous incarnations and Wiki precedents. Be prepared for an in-class "test" concerning your impressions and ideas. In particular, consider what you like, dislike, would like to try, and are concerned about learning how to do.
