Intros, ethics of authorship/anonymity, The Wall (Day 1, Sept 2)
- Roster stuff, opening activity (concentric circles).
- Peek at the wiki: how to get here, what to view.
- On Thursday (Day 2) we’ll discuss requirements and grading policies.
- Freewrite (five minutes) on anonymity, audience and what you know, believe, or feel about what should be public and what should be private (ethics of authorship).
- View (time-remaining) The Wall. Please take notes during the movie. We will stop in a few places for you to jot down your immediate impressions (freewriting).
Homework due 6 September
- Consider if you will be public on the CourseWiki (for your formal writing assignments) by using your name or more private (those of us in this class will all know who you are, but others will not). Decision must be made in class on Thursday.
- Write a two-page paper on The Wall. Double-spaced, 12 point Times, one inch margins. Bring two hard copies to class on Thursday. You will need to generate a thesis. Here are some approaches for thinking about your choice or decision as to the unifying theme of your essay:
- What is The Wall about?
- What connections and/or questions does The Wall show that feel similar to (or different from) your own life, now or at another time?
- What thoughts/emotions/associations does The Wall bring to you?
- In other words, you'll have to make some kind of sense of what you watched, and then to try to explain it to someone else. Give your paper a unique title - something that reflects the main point of your meaning/message.
No idea what to write? Check out what students wrote last year. If you do this, give credit (yes, proper referencing is necessary or you are guilty of plagiarism) and also note readibility: how well is the article laid out on the webpage? Is it missing formatting? The aesthetics matter - they give their own impression which can work toward the meaning you want to convey or against it.
