In-Class Activities: 13 November

  • Get ready to turn in your Annotated Bibliographies (on the 15th) and be sure they are posted in the wiki (as a subpage - remember how we did this in lab last Thursday! Get help if you need it.)
Twenty total sources, at least three of these must be from the course text! For each source:
  1. One paragraph of Argument Summary (a concise description of the author's rhetorical situation)
  2. Second paragraph of Argument Analysis (a detailed statement concerning how this source will be used in your argument)
  • Finish viewing Babel.

My friend Andrea will sub in class today. She'll be taking attendance.

Homework due November 15

1) Blog (Wordpress): Reply to capturing a moment. Be sure you are logged in to your Wordpress Weblog before you Reply so that you receive credit!

Before you Reply to Steph's post, read and take notes (especially quotes/citations!) the collected posts in the category Category: Babel for COM375.
  1. What is going on in our discussion of Babel and "Writing as Communication as Culture"?
  2. WHY does Steph return to this movie? (What is the relevance of this film to our course?)
  3. How does this film relate to what Steph wrote in Serendipity? Capturing a Moment?
For each reference that you use - (meaning a quote or paraphrase in which you cite the author's name and link to the exact entry where they wrote) - you will earn one point toward your baseline. Be thoughtful and thorough!

In-Class Activities: 15 November

There will be a brief presentation by my colleague Cirilia Rose before you participate in the student strike. Attendance will be taken. Don't forget you have work to turn in (and post in the wiki).

Tommie Joyner's visit is delayed until November 20. Do NOT miss that day (going home early for the holiday is not an excuse). Especially don't go if you have any need for baseline points OR if you want to take advantage of this professional advise. Tommie's detailed description of how to prepare you resume is priceless.

  • UMass student strike. A history of this (late) contract's bargaining is available at the UMass Graduate Employee Organization (GEO) website.

Homework due 20 November

Tommie Joyner visits to present on producing a professional resume.

Resume (extra credit).

Blogpost: Read and Reply (be sure you are logged into your own Wordpress blog first) to 'the sordid process of nation creation and occupation. Yes, read my entry and all the first-year students' responses. Contribute your own map of the conversation, select a theme of significance to you, and add something relevant and thoughtful.
