In-Class Activities

  • Collect Test 8.
  • Distribute Johari article to those who didn't get it last week.
  • Find out who forgot to identify themselves on Peer Evals #6.
  • Return work to those who haven't received it yet.

infrastructure

Organize skill sets, content-based working groups, process-based design teams.

Select Representatives from each working group and design team to research the wikisite for what has already been said about evaluation. (e.g., see Feedback to Steph, comments to building on success and emergence of care, the assessment link organized under Fishbowl K and M's task, plus any of your work/memories from in-class worksheets, the wiki, and blogs.
Volunteers to work with Steph defining/refining the on-going study and developing an informed consent statement.
Volunteers for the Tech Team (to work together, with some support from Steph and possibly another comm-major with savvy)

TEACHER-IMPOSED CRITERIA: everyone must join and participate in TWO of these subgroups.

Short-term Task

Goal: next week each working group (content), design team (process), Schein Team (!), will propose the specifics of their contribution. Likewise, the Tech Team, Study Team, and Evaluation Teams will present their work. These presentations must be tight in terms of time and clarity!

Fishbowl M will then convene to reconsider the same dimensions as Fishbowl K which (you hopefully recall) was implemented according to the plan proposed and agreed upon consensually by Fishbowl J.

A Guest!

John Robison will visit us next week.  :-) He responded to the info I organized in "talking with John Robison," posting a comment to my post distilling a dynamic of difference that seemed to be "between" us. Among many things, John responded to Thumpasorus' suggestion:

"When thinking about what we could do if John were to come a class of ours, the first thing that came to mind were "fishbowls." Perhaps John could be a "fish?" If his goal was to learn about how we have used his book in our class, we could have a discussion about how we have changed or thought more closely about how we communicate when negotiating our project. Also, wouldn't it be great if John were to join us in a discussion about what direction our Wiki will take? Talk about a fresh perspective!"
"As to being a fish in a bowl . . . I suggest to that person that he is as much a fish to be observed as me. It is actually quite educational and enlightening for me to see and read responses to my thoughts. So who knows . . . your thoughts today may be a quote in my next book."

Homework

  1. Do the work in both of your intra(sub)groups. Post preliminary reports by FRIDAY in your own Wordpress Weblogs (designate representatives) and then post the link to your webpost as a "Reply" to Audience.
  1. Read the online article, from EReserves, Functional Roles of Group Members by Kenneth D. Benne and Paul Sheats. Here are the directions:
  1. Go to the UMass Library EReserves (linked above)
  2. In "Any Search Field" select "Instructor" and then type my last name (Kent) into the blank search box.
  3. Select COM250 (for some reason they never got these transferred to our course, sorry). Enter the passcode ipc250 and you'll arrive at a list of articles.
  4. Download the assigned article (and any others if you are interested).
  5. Make a list of the specific roles you believe you play in both of your current subgroups. Name as many as apply. I assume that the lists will be similar in each group but not exactly the same. Be precise! Bring your two lists to class.

Note: if you are interested in the study Steph is conducting of this/our class, you may wish to read the article in COM375 (same passcode except uppercase IPC250), A Unified Field Theory of Group As A Whole Function by Mark Ettin. This is not required.

If you did not complete the two Johari Window assignments (#3) from last week, please do them ASAP! I am w-a-i-t-i-n-g on You!

Next weekend, return to the Wiki to prepare for Monday's session. At the very least you can count on reading the proposals from each subgroup by following the links in the Replies to Audience.

Please do not forget to complete Test 8! We clarified some confusion. Email Steph if you need another copy.

What we did last week

Some photos posted, and most of the rest of the work is in the blogs.
