The Matrix as Analogy

First grasp of the three levels of social relations (assignment details, February 17th)

  • What is the Matrix?, a Prezi by Teams Epsilon & Beta on "Question: What is The Matrix?" by Read Mercer Schuchardt in Glenn Yeffeth (Ed.), Taking the Red Pill: Science, Philosophy and Religion in The Matrix (2003).
  • Technology versus US, a Powerpoint by Teams Sigma & Delta on "Experience: What is The Matrix?" by Read Mercer Schuchardt in Glenn Yeffeth (Ed.), Taking the Red Pill: Science, Philosophy and Religion in The Matrix (2003).
  • Answering The Matrix Question, a Powerpoint by Teams Chi & Alpha on "Answer: What is The Matrix?" by Read Mercer Schuchardt in Glenn Yeffeth (Ed.), Taking the Red Pill: Science, Philosophy and Religion in The Matrix (2003).

Second Attempts

Promise & Reality: Media Concentration and the Global Village

What we can build on:
  • Dayglow's Escape Reality Tour
  • timespace (geography/distance/speed)
  • content across cultural boundaries
  • "the range of publicly available knowledge"
  • dynamics of ownership & control, content, consumption (production/distribution and demand)
  • consumers/fans as advertisers

"Already In It" (So Now What?)

What we can build on:
  • Croteau & Hoynes diagram of social relations - extend explanation with illustrations
  • dynamics of working conditions, audience participation, institutional control
  • Steph's diagram of three social relations (originally sketched on chalkboard)
  • What is the link between "ownership" and "globalization"? Why do we care??
  • more clarity and development of examples for "between" and "within" institutions
  • GAP: didn't mention copyright at all! :-/ to explain how labels control musicians (and audience access, too)
  • Where do the songs from your midterm video projects fit within the "three developments of globalization"?
  • Also, what range of genre selections (statistically) of the 21 categories listed in the presentation? What does this mean?
  • We're already in 'the matrix'
  • "...choose to look past.... we become the product..." quote
  • "trendhunters dissecting us"

What's the Deal with Globalization?

What we can build on:
  • the typo "pooper nations" and subsequent embarrassment, as documented by Tweets
  • the "two central components" of
  1. space, i.e., "the changing role of geography and physical distance" - isn't this a quote? so it requires a specific page & source citation? and (even though not specifically mentioned, time is embedded/implied too); and
  2. content: How will/can selections of content in the final video projects articulate with globalization?
  • interweaving of politics and economics with culture: what streams of discourse do you join? i.e., communication for peace & justice (League of Nations, United Nations) or ______________ (what are the alternatives?)
  • the 'between institutions' list is a hodgepodge (slide 6) that needs tighter categorization. You've named entities within three types of institutions:
- government - two tiers: national and international
- non-profit organizations
- journalism
and two phenomena of social organization that all institutions (and individuals) participate in (either actively or unconsciously):
- propaganda
- the new world information and communication order. The specific acronym, NWICO, refers to a particular political proposal for changing media domination by wealthier nations
  • the 'within institutions' slide (9) mixes everything - it shows more of a history of interactions among institutions rather than selecting one institution and its internal struggles
  • individual levels of ACCESS and AGENCY are key!!
  • identification of IDEOLOGY in our class!!! (slide 12)
  • Matrix analogy and question: are we pawns or not? How will you represent this position in the final video projects?!
